In this essay, I will discuss the role of observation in psychological research. To achieve this, I will be drawing on material from study materials that have been used during this module. I will explain what observation is and go on to explain why this is a useful tool in psychological research, providing examples, as well as presenting differing techniques that play an equally important role in research, before concluding and evaluating the important of observation, in light of the evidence that is presented.

Some socially produced difference and inequalities are the result of a person's upbringing or past. The story of John Arthur, in `Connecting Lives' (The Open University, 2014a) is a prime example of this and of how differences and inequalities are socially produced.
