There are many instances where appearance can be deceiving. This act of a deceiving appearance can be helpful in some cases and not in other cases. In the stories “A&P,” by John Updike, and “The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky,” by Stephan Crane, appearances are very deceiving. When someone perceives a person on the outside, it might not be who that person really is on the inside.
When three girls enter a grocery store wearing only two-piece suits, in the story “A&P,” a nineteen-year-old cashier looks at these girls as though they are very strong, powerful and self-confident. He says that the girls need to leave the store and are not allowed to come in again unless they are appropriately dressed. The cashier automatically assumes that the girl, queeny, is going to react in a powerful way, but instead she blushes and looks very embarrassed about the situation. This shocks the cashier, because what he had thought about her appearance from the outside was very deceiving from her true appearance on the inside. She was not the powerful, self-confident woman he thought she was.
In the story “The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky,” appearances are also very deceiving. The town sheriff leaves his town for the first time ever to go and get married. On the couples way home to the sheriffs town the bride is portrayed to be stupid on the outside but deceivingly smart from the inside. This part of her from the inside her husband never sees. On the train, the bride takes a watch out of her pocket and acts as if she did not know it was there. The bride asks her ...
