Parenting can be one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences in life. Some aspects of parenting come very naturally to some while it is a complete learning curve for others. Regardless of previous knowledge about being a parent, there will always be something new to learn.

In the article ‘Licensing Parents’ by Hugh LaFollette it is argued that parents should be required to gain a license to parent. LaFollette believes that this will ensure that adults have the right values, intentions and skills before they are able to take their new child home and raise them. This sort of requirement might be good in theory but would inherently wrong in the long run. The argument is far too vague and has very unclear criteria, which makes it hard to predict possible outcomes. The requirements and rules must be detailed as well as very clear in order for a system like this to work. Some of the major questions that would need to be answered are things like, what would happen if one or both parents don’t pass a the initial test, are there test retakes, if so how many, what happens to a child whose parents cant pass the test?

A retort from Latollcete could be along the lines of, the fact that this system is already in place for parents who decide to adopt their children.
