Too many cars and not enough spaces are leaving students and staff in aggravation with few choices of what to do with their cars when they leave home.

With the cold winter months quickly upon Bloomington there will be less people walking to class and more trying to cram onto buses or driving around.

Indiana University is home to 40,035 students, graduate and undergraduate. As of today there have been roughly 16,000 parking permits issued this year to both students and staff. Although it is not required to purchase a parking permit to have a car at IU, it is encouraged to purchase one.

even with a permit. This is because there are currently more cars on campus then available parking spots.

Many of the spots in the downtown area are meter, and require the driver to return to their car anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours to refill the meter to avoid receiving a ticket.

"In 2008 about 58,000 tickets were given out, 10,000 of which were over the summer months," said Doug Porter, manager of Parking Operations at Indiana University. With tickets that can cost up to $100, and the financial budgets that most students are constrained under, having a car on campus seems more like a hassle then a convenience.

Herman B. Wells Library, the Student Recreational Sports Center, and Kirkwood Ave. are examples of locations on campus where parking is heavily lacking the amount of student visitors.
