Invisible Man

The major theme of Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison is to construct a personal identity in a divided society. Ellison builds this theme on the assumption that in a racist country, blacks are granted no true identity; instead, they are merely the receptors of the projections of the white man’s fears.

he was living life once he became “invisible.” The narrator lives in a underground “hole” which he considers to be where he is “hibernating.” He is socially screwed because of his appearance; being a black in the 1910’s - 1920’s, and that's why he has separated himself from the rest of society (House of Solitude).

The narrator considers himself invisible in the visible white mans world, where blacks are treated as subjects and not humans. The Invisible man has found that light only deprives us of our uniqueness and dark illuminates our individuality, which means if everyone was the same colored skin, their traits would be easier to see (NYT).

The book's main theme is the stereotype of whites and blacks. As the title suggests, the main character is invisible because everyone sees him as a stereotype, not as a real person.
