Personal Writing: First Day At Oxford High School



My first day at Oxford High School was wonderful. The memory was vivid in my imagination. Growing up, I thought I would never make it to the “big hill” where the high school was located. I had gone through the Oxford School System in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade, but I was in for a surprise in high school. The bright, yellow sun arose and peeked through my window. I awoke with crusts of sleep in my eyes. I knew it was going to be a terrific day, but I was shaking with nervousness like a dainty tree in a tornado. I had carefully laid my clothes out the night before. I had picked out an over-sized pink and white button down shirt and new crisp pair of Levi blue jeans. ...

being taught was like solving a maze. The building had three stories and each level had over twelve classrooms. I had a different teacher for each class, unlike Oxford Middle School where I had only a couple of teachers. The teachers did not seem as gentle and caring as the teachers did in middle school. I only had five short minutes to change classes. When the rapid, booming bell rang for one class to end, it was like rush hour traffic in the city as we moved to the next class. People would stomp over me if I did not get out of their way. The sizes of the classes were tremendous compared to the size in junior high school. In junior high school, we were a close-knit family. In high school, I did well if I knew a couple of people in each of my eight classes. Entering high school was like being thrown out in the world with the big dogs to sink or swim.
