Physician's Responsibility


We, as health care providers, must up hold the trust that our patients give us. We must also do what ever it takes to cure/treat our patient's ailment. The scenario given puts the physician in a predicament. What is he supposed to do? Is he not supposed to tell he wife that she might have something more than she thinks she has, therefore, infecting her unborn child or keep the knowledge of the pilot's promiscuity?
The physician has an obligation to both of his patients, but he can not tell the pilot's wife of what he knows, even if it is for her benefit. Also, the doctor can not make judgement on what the pilot do, he is neither God nor preacher and thus repenting to him does not ...

The doctor could suggest to wife that she should get a blood test done too as for a physical. But he will have to get consent testing for HIV. The only other thing the doctor can do is talk to he husband, to persuade him to tell his wife on his own accord. Another reason why it is important to tell the wife is because she is pregnant. If the pilot is HIV positive, he could have passed that on to his wife. Now that his wife is with child, she can pass that on to her child. For the sake of two lives, his wife and his child, he should tell his wife even if this might break their marriage.
The legal issue that the doctor is faced with is breaking his confidentiality with the pilot if the doctor tells the wife. The percussion of the doctor's decision, if he chooses to tell the wife, is unknown. The pilot might bring a legal suit against the doctor for defamation of character or because the doctor breached a confidentiality issue.
