In 500 B.C., Athens took part in a democratic government. This meant that majority of the citizens, or landowning white males, were in control. The division of powers consisted of a council of 500, an assembly, and a judiciary system. Most were picked at random. This angered Plato because he believed that democracy is flawed. Most citizens lacked the ability to deal intelligently with matters of the state. Since members of the government were chosen at random, they were nothing but ordinary. A successful system would contain only the most elite, intellectual people. There was also a fear that the common folks lacked the desire to strive for the truth. They were content with mediocrity. Although Plato has a valid argument, he comes from an aristocrat background. He surrounded himself with philosophical ideas, so clearly he thought that it was philosophers who were meant to lead.
