Footsteps Of A Stranger

Throughout history we have seen patterns of conflict between people of different cultures and beliefs. Why do people lean towards the path of hatred just because someone is different from them? In Disney’s Pocahontas the acts of John Smith and the wise Pocahontas taught the basic rule of, do not judge a book by its cover. Although the encounters between the Powhatan Indians and Virginia Company were hostile in the beginning, they learned that they are no different from one another. No matter one’s cultures, beliefs, or ethnicity we are all humans and should learn from and appreciate others.

From the start of the movie violence is expected, however the tune of the song and the singing creates a peaceful mood. The societal beliefs of the Virginia Company, who believe it is their land for the taking, come into question. It becomes dark and gloomy as they separate because they grew feelings towards each other, which proves cultures do not matter. Pocahontas sings, “If you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you’ll learn things you never knew.”
The dark red and orange sky, the glowing faces, and chilling music represents hell, as the Indians and white men were going to fight. As Pocahontas expresses her love for John Smith the benefits of change are brought in.
