The early 1800s there stood a popular hotel in Downtown Greenville; the Mansion House Hotel stood on South Main Street in Greenville, South Carolina for almost one hundred years. In 1924 the Poinsett Hotel was born (the Mansion House was demolished). Built in the mid 1920s by the Woodside brothers, during a heyday for textiles in the upstate, this new hotel was once the twelve-storied jewel of Greenville. In 1924, John T. Woodside along side his brother, headed the effort to build a top luxury hotel in Greenville. The price tag for the new hotel was 1.5 million dollars. dining room for family dinners and ballrooms for formal dances. The hotel very quickly became known as "Carolina's Finest," and eventually by 1940 it was making money.

Also known as "Mr. Poinsett," Mason Alexander was labeled "the man who gave you clean money" because he made sure that no guest left the Five star Hotel with anything but clean money in their pocket. One of his rules was, anyone who handled money was required to polish all coins before putting them in the cash register for change. Mr. Alexander kept his hotel like "a good housekeeper would keep a house." He considered hotel patrons as honored guests who would receive a warm reception, a peaceful sleep, and fine dining. Some notable guests included Amelia Earhart, John Barrymore, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Bobby Kennedy and Liberace.
