After the Civil War the United States was a new nation, because It was now free. Millions of enslaved African Americans had won their freedom. But that did not stop the white people from being racist and seeing them as human beings. Their was many brutal incidents that happened after the Civil War. Americans were exhausted from the on going war, many had lost their loved ones and the handwork of the bridges and railroads were damaged. The north's wealth grew more then the southern wealth. abolished slavery, the 14th gave citizenship to anyone born or naturalized in the United States including African-Americans, and the 15th prohibited the government from denying voting rights based on race. The Freedman's Bureau was also established to help former slaves adapt to normal American life. This opened up public schools and churches as well.
