In "Rainbow Lorikeets" Mark O'Connor describes the exuberant lifestyle of the rainbow lorikeets as they survive in the natural environment. He portrays that they are a beautiful, colourful bird full of energy and life. This poem focuses on the rainbow lorikeet's life and how they are close to extinction with both creatures and humans a threat to them and the beautiful nature. The use of poetic techniques and imagery also describes how they are vulnerable and struggling creatures in a vast natural environment.

lorikeets fly and move around and how they are beautiful creatures. He uses similes to communicate with readers the image of rainbow lorikeets as beautiful birds. When Mark O'Connor says "comic book bandidos, but equally rainbow-motley clowns; with their walk-claws they tread-cling, wading and stumbling up loose sprays of blossom as a lily-trotter walks floating weeds", his tone is light hearted and amused as he observes the way these birds move and compares their beauty to plants and in the natural surroundings.

He uses sound and visual imagery throughout the poem. Furthermore in the quote "their brush-tongues delving and combing bully honey from bottle-brush florets or bite them off short, munching sweet mash". It describes what they are eating and enables the audience to visualise the birds as they devour all the different flavours.
