Raymond Mary Kolbe


was born on January 8, 1894, in Zdunska Wola, near Russian Occupied Poland. Father Kolbe created a life of good deeds which he voluntarily ended to prolong another man’s. Because he was involve in sickness as well as enemy threat, St. Maximilian lead a life with a constant chance of death, just like the Whiskey priest from the novel The Power and the Glory.
Already proficient in virtue, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Kolbe in 1906A.D., about the time of his first communion. in 1918, Father Maximilian taught Church History at a seminary in Cracow in 1919. Although the Whiskey priest’s history was not crimeless like Father Kolbe’s, he still taught mass proceedings and baptism.
After being diagnosed with tuberculosis and surviving a near fatal heart attack, Maximilian was determined to organize the first group of the Militia outside of Italy. The phenomenal growth of this apostolate between 1927 and 1929 led to the foundation of Niepokalanow near Warsaw. The name “Niepokalanow” means “City of the Immaculate”, and was completely self supported, equipped with a seminary, a mission house, a printing establishment, and a radio station. “Father Maximilian was a guiding spirit” (Chenu, Broono.P78).
