From the violent and brutal clash between Indians and British colonists in the Americas grew a new literary genre. The focus was mainly on the disruptive and brutle natives care towards the captivity of the colonists. Two writers during the 1600's portrayed their hardships while wading out captivity with the Indians. After her capture, Mary Rowlandson published a book entitled Narrative Of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson describing her horrible account with the Indians, while another writer named John Smith wrote about his swashbuckling adventures with the Indians as well as his love for life. that God was punishing his people for breaking their special covenant. She described the relationship between the Indians and the colonists as one dealt with by God. As she surveyed her home after the attack by the Indians, she credited the destruction not to the Indians, but to God, when she quoted "Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations He has made in the earth" (35). Thus, Rowlandson revealed her belief that God would act against other people simply because they were enemies to the Puritans. Rowlandson believed that the sins of the colonists, which deviated from their covenant with God, led God to use the Indians as a means for punishment. Quoting scripture in her narrative, Rowlandson concluded that God had orchestrated the events of her captivity, and, as a being controlling all humanity, had acted with special purpose.
