The Relationship Between Research Labs, Media, Government, And Industries

The relationship between the research labs, media, government, and
industries, is a complex one. The research labs need money to do research,
money which the government, and industries possess. In order to get the
much needed research money, the labs must show that what they are
researching is worth the large sums of money that they are requesting.
This is where the media comes into play. Through the media, the research
lab publically displays what it is doing, and what good that this research
could come to. The public then sees this information and goes to the stock
market and buys stock for the company that is providing the funding for the
research. The company's revenue goes up, ...

Times article, in which Nobel laureate James D. Watson, allegedly states
that “Judah will cure cancer in two years,” it turns out that this was
mearly an ovezealous reporter trying to get a big scoop. Either way, the
article fulfilled the equation. Dr. Folkman's office counted 1000 phone
calls a day for a week, and countless doctors were flooded with hopeful
cancer patients wanting “the cure.” The newspaper article also caused the
stocks and revenues of the sponsors of Dr. Folkman to soar, therefore
leaving more money for Dr. Folkman to recieve for further research. On the
further research side of the coin, other labs started to working on the
research with little to no success. This cast doubt once again onto Dr.
Folkman's research.
The true cure for cancer will not come for a while, and will not
