The two articles that I have chosen involve a controversial issue that many people believe to be an unnecessary debate. I have chosen the debate over the banning of . The technologies in the U.S alone have tripled the amount of multiple births since 1980 and quadrupled since 1971. The women whose lives have been changed by the appearance of these multiple births have been taking a powerful fertility drug called, PergonalÒ. This drug induces the ovaries to create multiple fertile eggs in order for at least one viable pregnancy to occur. Many of these couples have options of selected abortion to limit the risk to mother and child. These issues have many feminists and doctors having heated arguments over whether or not to abolish, regulate or just let the infertility drugs go on there course.
The first article that I read and analyzed was written by Janice G. Raymond, she argues that all should be banned. Janice argues that the IVF and surrogate mother hood (the implantation of another couples fetus into another woman to carry the pregnancy full term) “are a form of violence against woman because they technologically ravage women’s bodies.” She continues to argue that the only way to protect the women from the “abuse and exploitation is to ban the technology”.
