Orchid Jetsam, by Dee Joda, is actually a literary series including two mysteries that are related in terms of plot, style and character. Both installments, Orchid Jetsam and Clear Land, are written poetically, with a tangible sense of anticipation and breathlessness implicit throughout each tale. The characters have an almost surreal, comic-book quality, and the entire tone of Orchid Jetsam resembles a virtual reality of sorts. also difficult to accept at face value. They are caricatures of real people, who experience fantastical things on their quest for truth. Detective Grace Abe, for instance, is inhabited by the ghost of a U.S. Marine who himself was an undercover assassin. She exists with this suppressed, inner being, running from place to place, and attempting to resolve a public epidemic of hemlock poisoning. Along with her two partners, Officers Andrew Chen and Cloe O'Brian, Detective Abe tries to solve the mystery behind a related series of killings that have consumed the city. The characters are swift and clever, reminiscent of detectives from classic literary works. But they are also exaggerated and sometimes laughable, making it difficult for the reader to take them too seriously.
