Cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamines are three drugs among many that are recognized by society as dangerous to one’s health, as addicting, and not to mention illegal. Along with these drugs, there is another substance that is equally addicting and disruptive, but this substance is advertised in commercials, billboards, and magazines. The tobacco industries have used clever slogans, celebrity endorsements, and even awarded prizes to sell more cigarettes, and have been successful in their attempts. Due to the persuasiveness of the tobacco companies’ campaigns and propaganda, not only smokers, but also non-smokers are being affected with several complications, and even dying in the result ...

A camel smoking a cigarette, wearing a leather jacket, with several beautiful ladies surrounding him portrays that smoking is for tough and outgoing ladies’ men. Models are used to illustrate that smoking will make women thinner and more glamorous. Slogans such as “You’ve come a long way, baby” interprets women’s entrance in the business world. Teens are especially being targeted because they make up 90% of all new smokers. Ads imply that smoking will make teens look mature. Companies such as Marlboro even give points that can be achieved with each carton of cigarette, which later can be traded for prizes such as duffel bags, sweaters, and other items that may be appealing to teens.
