The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a play that portrays the hysteria that accompanied the hangings of the Salem Witch Trials. Friends, neighbors, and companions turned on each other and accused each other of witchcraft for different motives of revenge. Reputation, greed, and personal gain lead different people to accuse these people of an act that was punished by hanging or to confess to a sin that they did not commit, rotting in jail as a result. Parris says in Act I, "Now look you, child, your punishment will come in its time. But if you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it know, for surely my enemies will ruin me with it" (Miller 1093). At this time in The Crucible, Betty is still stuck in a coma after the girls were caught dancing in the woods. This quotes shows how instead of worry about the well-being of his daughter, Reverend Parris asks if witchcraft was involved because he fears that the townspeople will use it to tarnish his good name he continuously tries to upkeep. While in a state of paranoia, he begins to give people the label of witchcraft in fear that they will use witchcraft to get him to lose his position. His paranoia over his position in the town of Salem is the catalyst that persuades Reverend Parris to seek revenge and convict others of witchcraft.
