The Manipulating Hands of Fear


Many people often say that fear makes us stronger and wiser. However, this sentiment is proven false by Arthur Miller in his play. In The Crucible, the characters’ reaction to fear leads to poor decision making. That being said, the characters from his play react to fear in a way that doesn’t make them stronger or wiser. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, fear produces impulsivity, which forces Reverend Parris, Elizabeth Proctor, and Abigail Williams to perform unimaginable deeds that will not only affect themselves, but the entire town of Salem as well.

of the moment, Parris cracked under the pressure and failed to tell the truth because he is afraid of facing the consequences. When Parris lies in court, he is messing with Salem’s justice system by preventing a fair trial. Through this, we see that Reverend Parris’ accumulating fear has blinded him and forced him to do the wrong thing.

Secondly, Elizabeth Proctor’s inability to tell the truth in the court is because she is afraid of the Salem community finding out about her husband having an affair with Abigail Williams. But more importantly, she lies to show her husband John Proctor, that she is loyal to him and has forgiven him. But these actions of hers will greatly affect Salem. When Judge Danforth asks Elizabeth if John Proctor is an adulterer, she says ‘no’ in an indecisive tone (106). In doing this, she messes up the entire trial.
