American Government: Ten Questions Answered

Campaign contributions are carefully regulated by law. Individuals may only contribute $1,000 per candidate per election for congressional and presidential elections. Political action committees are allowed to give up to $5,000 per candidate per election. The same amounts are true for political party committees. There is no limit to how much money a candidate and his/her family can give to that candidate's campaign. The Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 allows presidential candidates to receive public funds if they raise at least $5,000 in individual contributions of $250 or less in at least 20 states.
