The United States is a nation that has been active advocates for a democratic form of government. The staunch support of the American government and society for the implementation of democracy is reflected through the establishment of the Constitution, which served as the official and legal law of the nation, and the disapproval of the US during the Cold War period against Communism and other forms of government that suppress the freedom of the people to their rights and to live a good, free life. Although democracy is considered the rule of the many, and is the ideal of liberal rights ad freedom, democracy cannot be considered entirely a perfect form of governance and exercise of the individual's rights and freedom to participate in ruling or controlling the workings of a nation. In fact, the biggest supporter and advocate of democracy, the United States of America, has been considered not a perfect model of the democratic system of politics. This contradiction, that is, US being an advocate of democracy, and its being labeled as an imperfect model nation of democracy, is reiterated from a statement by Edward Greenberg: "... the United States does not fulfill the expectations of either the Participatory, the Liberal-Representative, or the Pluralist model of democracy."
