Rhetorical strategies are writing techniques that an author may use to convey meaning in their message while also maintaining the goal of persuasion as an attempt to promote their argument. In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglass uses his own personal experiences as a way to propel his argument against the horrid institution of slavery and its effects on both slaves and slave owners.. Throughout the narrative Douglass uses emotional appeal and variance in tone as an attempt to captivate his audience and bring to light the cruelty that he personally experiences as a slave.

With his overall narrative focusing on his ill informed audience, Douglass uses phrases such as â€śheart-rending shrieksâ€ť and â€śupon her naked backâ€ť so that his audience may feel sympathy while also being informed of the shocking truth. This allows Douglass to form an emotional influence over unaware audience; this allows Douglass to begin to persuade his audience into believing his argument by having them become emotionally involved.
There are many instances in which Douglass asserts an emotional tone as a way to further influence his audience to accept horrors of slavery.
