The rapid rise of auto theft crimes in Charlotte, North Carolina is making the duties of auto theft investigation very strenuous work. Detective David Clayton of auto theft investigations from the Charlotte Police Department allowed me to interact with him for two consecutive days. I also interacted with the department head of Non-Emergency Police Services (NEPS). This department initiates a lot of reports for Clayton’s investigations. to the location, and gets information such as the victims name, address and general information about him or her, including the place of employment. The next important piece of information required is the VIN number from the vehicle, which is the vehicle identification number and/or the tag number. Without this information, the proof of owner is hard to determine. If this VIN number is not presented, the initialization of the report is incomplete. If the owner is not verified, the report will be filed as auto theft but it will not be entered in APB, DCI, neither will it be entered in NCIC terminals. These terminals allow law enforcement agencies of different levels to search for the car. I will go further into detail about these terminals later in the report.

NEPS. The same process occurs in this way of making a report, only with a few changes. First, after initializing the report, the operator’s computer automatically issues a generate police report number. When they are done making the report, they can send out an APB when they hang up with the victim. The operator must immediately walk over toRecords office across the hall and deliver the report.
