Chris Piper, a broadcast journalism major at the University of Texas at Arlington wrote an interesting essay for the student newspaper. In his essay, "A is for Absent", Piper argues that attendance should not be mandatory for students. He believes that since students are paying for their own education, they should have the choice whether or not to attend class. He argues that if a student can earn good grades on the required course work they should not be penalized due to poor attendance. often compare class attendance to that of a job, and if you "fail to show up, you would be fired", but class attendance and going to work are two different circumstances. Piper protests that "a job pays for my services, but I pay my professors for their services".
Piper claims that `if a student can earn good grades on required coursework without attending class, then instructors should grade that student accordingly". As a college student who willingly pays thousands of dollars on my own education, I agree with some points of Piper's argument. I believe that it is up to the student of whether or not they should be forced to attend class. If I am paying a professor for their services I should not be penalized with a bad grade because I chose to skip class. If I can manage to comprehend and understand the given material and still earn a good grade, I as a student, who pays for these services, should be given the grade that I earned, regardless of my attendance.
