Motivating Factor for the Implementation of: The New Deal

It is difficult to refute the effectiveness of the New Deal in pulling the country out of the Great Depression. What is debatable however, is Roosevelt's motivation for instituting the programs in the first place. Some may argue that Roosevelt was a pure humanitarian, deeply wanting to help his fellow man. Others say that commerce and capitalism motivated Roosevelt. In fact, all the ideological theories can be summed up as an ends to justify the true mean, namely the preservation of the Democratic Political Party with Roosevelt at the helm.

Shrewdly, the New Deal concentrated on the most impoverished; tenant farmers, unskilled laborers, and minorities (women and African Americans).
Traditionally these groups were powerless and held no true political voice.[iii] Roosevelt and his New Deal seized upon their hunger for representation. For the "benefit" of these groups, programs such as the AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Agency), WPA (Works Projects Administration) and the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) were instituted.[iv]
Determined to promote his cause, Roosevelt attempted to portray himself as a common man and conceptualized a way to do so. Weekly Sunday updates on The New Deal's progress, also known as "Fireside Chats"[v] were broadcast.
