Miss Emily is most notably a woman with a firm will but for whom the distinction between reality and illusion has blurred out. She refuses to become a member of her community by alienating herself. This independence of spirit and pride made her a monster; yet her refusal to accept the herd values with it dignity and courage. Miss Emily was always trying to escape her father, the pressure and all that came with him. Even in her death Emily could not escape her father with her father’s picture hanging above where her coffin was placed.
