Rubidium - Research Paper

Rubidium

The 37th Element
is located between potassium and cesium in the first Group
on the Periodic Table. It's atomic number is 37and its atomic mass is
85.4678. In French and German it is , in Italian and Spanish it is
rubidio.

History and General Facts

Rubidium was discovered spectroscopically in1861 by Robert Bunsen
and Gustav Kirchhoff in Germany. They experimented with spectral lines of
light, now called spectroscopy. They noticed that, when heated or burned,
different elements produced distinctive colors of light when transmitted
through a prism. One element in the mineral lepidolite, when heated,
produced a distinct red line, this element they called rubidium from the

Rubidium are found in the leaves of
tobacco, tea, and coffee, as well as some other plants. Rubidium is
similar to lithium and cesium, which are found in combined forms as complex
minerals. It is not found in a pure elemental (metallic) state in nature,
but only as compounds in mineral deposits such as pollucite, carnallite,
lepidolite, leucite, and zinnwaldite, in addition to mineral springs. These
various minerals are found in the United States in California, South Dakota,
New Mexico, and Maine. There are 17 known Isotopes of Rubidium. The only 2
naturally-occurring isotopes are Rb85 and Rb87. Rubidium-87 is present to
the extent of 27.85% in natural rubidium. Ordinary rubidium is
sufficiently radioactive to expose a photographic film in 30-60 days.

Rubidium is a soft, silvery white, lightweight, metallic solid. It
is an element of the alkali group and is the second most electropositive
and alkaline element. It can be liquid at ambient temperature, it's
melting point is ...
