Creativity has changed so much in the music industry compared to what it was like twenty or more years ago. There was once a time when there was no such thing as remix's or mix CD's. Now people have expanded their creativity and it has gotten them into trouble. People are doing what is called sampling; Taking parts of artists' music and putting it into their own songs. Some people are really good at this and it makes for a great soundtrack but it has also gotten them into trouble. There is a very fine line when it comes to sampling. In the article, "U2 Negativland: The Case from Our Side.", Negativland was a group of musicians who create music of already-recorded words and music from other sources. In this article, they created a thirteen minute single that included computer-modified segments of the song "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," by the famous rock group U2. Negativland did not pay any sort of fee or ask permission to use their music and ended up getting in a lot of trouble for it. There was a suit filed against Negativland and they were required to turn over all copies of the single and original tapes, pay any legal cost, and publish explanations and apologies.
Some might wonder why this was such a huge deal. It's not like they took the original song and sold it. They took bits and pieces of U2's song and created their own music out of this. Others would argue that they violated copyright and fair use laws. I ...
