The Monterey Bay Aquarium has made a huge effort to study sea otters and keep them safe. First they study sea otters in the wild. They capture and tag dozens of sea otters and track and monitor them for from birth to death. Every Spring and Fall teams of scientists go over 400 miles on the coast of California to count sea otters. It’s part of the US Geological Survey annual census. The scientists and their teams work with medical and engineering experts to find better ways to keep track of the otters, with less stress on the animals. They rescue stranded sea otters along the shore give them medical tests and study how a “normal” otter behaves and how to treat a sick otter. They gather otters who have died and try to figure out how they died and what they can do to prevent other otters from dying the same way. They care for stranded pups.
