One, who has committed a terrible crime or sin in their life, can never fully leave and forget about what they committed. There is always something that is reminding them of this daily, which reminds them of their sin. Pearl has endured some of the evil that was cast upon Hester when she committed the sin of adultery. Pearl because of this evil that she endured it has been able to control and take over pearl’s self. Throughout The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne develops Pearl into the symbol of a devil in Pearls life, but that she also develops into a sturdy support in Hester’s life. Along with a wild creature, Pearl is seen as something that is painful yet loving in Hester’s life. Pearl created her own scarlet letter, however, she created her’s out of green seaweed that Pearl had found. She wore it around in almost humiliating way of Hester. Hester sees as Pearl as “My happiness! –She is my torture” (103). “She is the scarlet letter, only capable of being loved, and so endowed with a million-fold the power of retribution for my sin.” (103)
