I arrived at the school board meeting in Lebanon, CT around a half an hour early with the intention of posing a few questions to the Chairman of the board, or should that be impossible, the vice chairman, and so on. I was immediately rebuffed by the Chairman who was busy setting up the framework for the meeting, but I got to sit down with the Vice Chairman, Darcy Battye, and posed my few questions to her in the available time before the meeting started. I began by asking her what the intentions for today’s meeting were; learned that there had recently been a series of maintenance issues that were going to be addressed one by one, as well as a report on energy consumption. quite nearly mirrored the community present in the audience. But for a few variations, the majority of the audience was white women of middle age. Likewise, it would be safe to assume that in terms of social class the community, and the representative audience, was middle/working class. After the meeting I asked Battye whether the attending audience ever varied much to which she laughed and replied “No.” A small community such as Lebanon’s usually has a large audience like this meeting did as everyone is concerned with the welfare of the education system; still the faces in the crowd seldom changed.
The meeting itself was exactly as Mrs. Battye had said it would be- an extremely formal evaluation of current maintenance issues.
