to the political fire, it was bound to explode into war. The northern states firmly opposed slavery, as it was unprofitable for their manufacturing industries. The west sided with the north on this conflict, as the small scale farms seen in the most recently settled part of the country were not built to be dependent on slave labor. The south was the root of the conflict, however, as the plantation system developed there was dependent on slave labor to function profitably. If they were to have to pay for the labor, their profit margins likely would be too low to stay afloat. Consequently, they demanded that slavery stay intact. The opinions on this issue ranged from siding with the north, to siding with the south, or a hybrid of the two. "Progressions" made on slavery such as the Missouri compromise were in no way solutions to the quandary, but rather a means of covering it up and temporarily providing satisfaction.
