The Catholic Church was at the height of its power in the years 300-1200 because of several reasons. It was the only centralized institution that was powerful enough to hold a sway over the relationships of the state. It was the beneficiary of large acres of land that enabled it to gain wealth and power. The monarchs needed the approval from the Church for their divine right to rule. However, the downside was that corruption was fostered among the papacy.
