Urras is a paradise world that stands in stark contrast to the desert planet Anarres. On the other hand, Anarres is a world of complete freedom, protecting its liberty from outsiders with strict isolation. Its greatest physicist Shevek believes that he can revitalize his society by breaking years of tradition and linking the two planets. He sets out on a momentous journey, at great personal risk. While traveling the countryside "all the people he saw, in the smallest country village, were well-dressed, well-fed, and, contrary to his expectations, industrious" (82).
