Many factors influence how children develop in single parent families: the parent’s age, education level, and occupation; the family’s income, and the family’s support network of friends and extended family members. Disadvantages in these factors that often accompany single parenting appear to cause most of this association rather than single parenting itself. Single parent families can still be strong, healthy families. There are some drawbacks, but there are also some positive aspects that may be a result of being in a single-parent family setting. Children who grow up in single parent homes learn to assume responsibility. Children of one parent families, out of necessity, must assume more responsibility at home. They quickly learn to appreciate the things that parents work hard to provide.
