However, they should know that there are 4000 chemical agents in second-hand smoke. 250 substances are known to be toxic such as nicotine, tar, phenol. More than 50 cause cancer. Scientific evidence shows there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. 3000 non-smoking adults die of disease caused by second-hand smoke each year. If we continued smoking in public places, that number would increase rapidly in the future.

Another reason smoking should be banned in all public spaces is that it is unpleasant to non-smokers. The smoke from other people’s cigarettes pollutes the air and atmosphere around public spaces.
