What do the following have in common: the air you breath, the water in the oceans, the fluid in your body, and the brass in a button? Although they may sound unrelated, all of these examples describe mixtures. Very few of the materials you encounter everyday are pure substances. Most are heterogenous mixtures or homogenous mixtures. A pile of pennies and nickels, for example, is a heterogenous, which is characterized by visibly different parts. The substance that does the dissolving is the solvent. Not every substance dissolves in every other substances. A substance that dissolves in another substance is called soluble. Soluble means capable of being dissolved. A substance that does not dissolve is called insoluble.
TYPES OF SOLUTION
There are several different possible combinations of solute and solvent according to the physical state. It is useful, however, to categorize solutions according to physical state of the solution: solid solutions, gaseous solutions, and liquid solutions.
