Some Keep the Sabbath Going to Church - A Limited Analysis

When I read Emily Dickinson's "Some Keep the Sabbath Going to Church" I almost immediately saw metaphors leaping out at me. I know that with a metaphor, the actual word and meaning of another term do not have to match in order to have the same meaning in the end. In the first and second stanzas, Dickinson writes that she does not go to a physical church, instead she has her own ways to commune with God in nature. because she has a direct connection, she has a pure relationship and is clear about her destination. She possibly feels that Heaven has already reached her.

A true individual, Dickinson was never afraid to stand out on her own. She shows a distinct example of individual vs. society in this poem by saying right from the start "Some keep the Sabbath going to Church - I keep it staying at home" (1017) from this point a line is drawn. She writes "God preaches, a noted Clergyman" (1017) and it seems almost laughable as if she's saying the other Clergymen are not good enough because they aren't popular. It seems the best way to get to Heaven is already found out, by Emily Dickinson; the direct, pure path that only each individual can find themselves.
