The war was based on U.S. going to war with Spain to help Cuba fight for their independence from Spain. Also another key thought to the war was the destruction of the U.S. Maine. This war only lasted a few months, and there was not many deaths caused by this battle. This war helped Cuba gain independence, and changed our role in foreign policy made the U.S. the dominate power in the western hemisphere, and created the U.S. a new stature in world affairs.
