In the short story Penny in the Dust the penny was what the relationship of the father and the son was based on. When the son lost the penny it was like he was losing his father’s respect. The setting has much to do with the story because now a penny is nothing, we find them all the time but back then it was a big deal when your dad gave you a penny. It has to be hot or else the boy couldn’t lose his penny in the dust. The father’s dying is very important to the relationship because the boy realizes that even though his father hardly ever showed him deep in his heart he loved him very much. The relationship’s of the father and son were greatly dependent on the setting and plot in the story Penny in the Dust.
