Theodore Roosevelt the countries 26th President came to power after the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901, as he was McKinley' Vice-President. elected by the people of the country. On the east portico of the Capitol Building he was sworn in by Chief Justice Melville Fuller. This was to be Roosevelt's first Inaugural Address. In attendance was a diverse group of people, including Native Americans, cowboys, students, and miners. Roosevelt needed to prepare a speech that delivered a sense of trust, unity, and strength for the American People. He had done a great deal in his first term and expectations were high, the faith and belief in his administration was at stake, and Roosevelt had a lot he still wanted to do.
The opening of the speech set the tone and weight for the rest of the words to follow.

"MY fellow-citizens, no people on earth have more cause to be thankful than ours, and this is said reverently, in no spirit of boastfulness in our own strength, but with gratitude to the Giver of Good who has blessed us with the conditions which have enabled us to achieve so large a measure of well-being and of happiness ...
