The population is about 7 million of who around 20% are foreigners. In spite of being a small country, it is a federation of 26 cantons and celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding in 1998. Federal Council, composed of 7 members who are at the top, governs it. These people are elected by the parliament, which in turn has chambers. The parliament has two chambers, of which the National Council is directly elected by the citizens and has 200 members. Apart from this, there is the Council of States, which is composed of the representatives of the states, with 46 seats. The political system in the country is one of direct democracy where rights of initiative and referendum have been given to the citizens.
