Tess Of The D'Ubervilles: Environments And The Feels Of The Characters



In Tess of the D'Ubervilles, many different environments are employed to
convey the different feelings of the characters at certain points in the
story. Tess, who moves about the land frequently, finds a haven at certain
places and a hell at others. With Alec D'Uberville, she is in a hell--the
first time, she is essentially ruined for life. The second time around
with Alec she is ruined again, but at that time, it was by her own choice,
for she murdered Alec and finally gained inner-peace.

Each setting used in the story assists the point of that section of the

of Angel unhindered by her past. She had killed her past in the house
which was slowly killing her.

The next residence for Tess after the murder was in an abandoned mansion:
Bramshurst Court. This was the perfect place for Tess and Angel to escape
to. She wished for nothing more than to be left alone, from other people
and from her past. In this house she found a refuge with her true love,
and experienced what she had not for much of her life--contentment. She
did not desire to continue on with their journey at all. Tess there found
the solitude with her one love that she had wanted for so long, and
without the constant burden of her past to ruin things. With her murder of
Alec D'Uberville, Tess had killed three things. First off, Alec himself
was now dead, and along with Alec was Tess' awful past. However, the
physical action of murdering Alec had also murdered her future. However,
