Watson drew upon many resources and the knowledge of many individuals over the course of time. Perhaps no other played such a greater part in aiding in his efforts than did Francis Crick. Crick was loud and to some he appeared to be obnoxious. Watson, however, appreciated the vocal and unreserved nature that Crick exhibited. Another one of Watson’s affiliates and colleagues was Maurice Wilkins. He was well reserved, calm and worked at King’s College in London. Wilkins is accredited with being the individual that sparked the passionate flame within Watson to start doing DNA research. Rosalind Franklin was Wilkin’s assistant. experiments in biochemistry. He worked frequently with Herman Kalckar. Watson soon made the self discovery that he did not enjoy biochemistry. Thus, he was introduced to Ole Maaloe, also a scientist doing extensive research on phages. Ultimately, it was Ole that he started spending most of his time with. He justified this changeup by asserting that Herman was no longer fervent about teaching him. Consequently, he built a solid relationship with Ole. Herman did recommend that Watson go to Naples and visit the Zoological station there. It was here that he first met Wilkins and started his first real work on DNA. This resulted from a meeting on the makeup of molecules found in living cells. He knew that this was certainly the “stuff of life.”
