About the Government Affairs Office (GAO)
The ABA's Governmental Affairs Office (GAO) serves as the "eyes, ears and voice" of the organized bar in the nation's capital.
The GAO legislative staff monitors congressional and executive branch developments of interest to the organized bar and informs the constituencies within the bar about these developments. The GAO publishes and distributes two publications: the bi-weekly Washington Summary, which abstracts the Congressional Record and the Federal Register to highlight congressional action on legislation and proposed rules and regulations of federal agencies of interest to bar entities; and the monthly Washington Letter, which provides ...

to influence the outcome of federal policy decisions on these issues. This involves testimony, circulation of position papers and meetings with members of Congress and their staffs. The GAO also maintains an active grassroots lobbying effort and distributes periodic "alerts" to ABA entities and state and local bar groups advising them of legislative developments which call for concerted action.
In 1986, the GAO expanded its efforts beyond the federal arena by establishing a State Legislative Clearinghouse to track important state legislative developments and provide a regular overview of these developments to the organized bar through the publication of the State Legislative Report newsletter.
The ABA is a non-partisan organization. It does not have a political action committee, does not make political contributions, and does not endorse candidates for office.
