A Heck of a Journey


In the novel The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, a young shepherd named Santiago exhibits fearlessness as he journeys to find his Personal Legend. Throughout the course of the novel, Santiago is constantly in pursuit of the life he is supposed to live. Along this journey to find his life goal, his hidden treasure, at the Egyptian Pyramids, Santiago acquaintances himself with very impactful people, although meeting some of these people weighs him down with more than just doubt. old man was the King of Salem who told Santiago he would have to make sacrifices and charging him one tenth of his flock of sheep. After receiving the councils from King Melchizedek, Santiago decided to leave the town in pursuit of his Personal Legend. First he left behind a girl he thought might be the one; “The boy felt a pang in his heart, thinking about the merchant’s daughter”(Coelho 25). This is a small sacrifice, leaving a girl behind, as opposed to leaving your whole flock of sheep behind. Before his departure, Santiago had one last thing to do, he had to sell every last one of his sheep. This was a great sacrifice because his dream of being a shepherd and traveling no longer existed. Through this, Santiago feels that his journey is far more important than anything going on in his life at the moment. Although it seems he is doing everything for the right reasons, his journey begins to become more and more difficult.
