of the most productive oceans in the world because it is specifically located in a place where deep water upwells, supplying nutrients to the surface water (Woods Hole, para. 1). Unlike the surface waters of the Bahamas, large amounts of fresh water flow into the sea from the continents around the sea, which makes the water very shallow and the salinity of the surface water lower than that of almost any other ocean. Because of the low salinity, ice forms easily on the sea during the winter. In the spring, water from the Amur River and melting sea ice create a surface environment with an increased carbonate production, which results in more growth and nutrients on the top layer of the water.
