The Banality of Evil in the Cold War

Although the date, May 8, 1945, ends the war, it does not end the legacies of Nazism, World War II, and the Holocaust. The end of the war meant continued and even new forms of misery. Herf and Arendt investigate different yet similar representations of how memory of the Holocaust had functioned. Each shows the impact of politics on Holocaust memory and how figures of Germany displace responsibility and instead do less than is required of them by not confronting the Nazi past.

West German government held more promise, but comes up short when actually delivering. West Germany's policy included compensation payments for Jewish survivors, close ties to Israel, numerous parliamentary debates regarding judicial confrontation with the Nazi past, and an elite and then popular discussion of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism. However, the power of one man would halt of this from being as powerful as it could have been.
While Chancellor Konrad Adenauer denounced the totalitarianism of the Nazi past and the Communist present, he could have done far more to explain publicly how the anticommunism of the Cold War differed from the Nazi war on "Jewish bolshevism." Also rather than taking appropriate actions against Nazi Party members, he insisted on keeping one Nazi member, Hans Globke, as one of his closet and most powerful assistants.
