This past week we watched a movie called Iron Jawed Angels, which was about the fight for women’s suffrage in the United States during the early 1900s. There were many major actors in this film but the two main characters in this film were Alice Paul and Lucy Burns. They attended a university in London and got involved in the suffrage movement there. They felt that women had the right to vote. When Paul and Burns arrived in Washington D.C, they joined the NWP organization which was the National Women Party. Carrie Chapman Catt was the head of that organization. They wanted a voice and opinion to put in on their own for democracy. While standing outside, in front of the White House, Alice Paul was arrested for obstructing traffic. World War I was going on that this time and it was the wrong time to be on a strike. To further her cause, Paul went on a hunger strike and starved herself in prison. She was sent to a mental hospital and was asked to explain herself. There was no need to explain herself, she just wanted a vote in government. The one who was in charge of the quarter force fed her to eat. She was then released with the other women who were also with her. They waited to see if they’re right to vote was passed.
